Laser tattoo removal is the solution for these people who wish to get rid of their tattoo with little to no side effects.
How Laser Tattoo Removal Works
This process works by fragmenting the pigment of the tattoo by the use of a light ray of high strength. By varying laser intensity and wavelength, other pigments can also be treated and removed. All the laser light wavelength are absorbed by the black color in the tattoo, so it is the easiest color to remove by this process.
For carrying out a laser tattoo removal one must go to a trained professional who examine the tattoo and advises accordingly. The number of visits required to remove the tattoo will vary as per the size, age, color of the tattoo, the depth of the tattoo pigment and the color of the skin.
Things to keep in mind
- Find a reputable dermatologist, aesthetist, or consultant to get the treatment done. Maybe ask for a recommendation from your physician
- Insurance companies don’t usually cover the expense of this treatment as it is not medically necessary
- Such treatment may require a full payment in advance so make sure to find out about cost before hand.
- A smaller tattoo requires lower settings than a larger one and with every sitting the tattoo will become progressively lighter
Process of laser tattoo removal
- Though the process is a bit uncomfortable, most people do not require an anesthesia. Depending on the pain threshold and the area of the tattoo, applying a topical anesthesia cream may be recommended
- The person is first asked to wear protective eye wear
- The consultant will then test to see the reaction of the skin to the laser, to decide on the intensity of the energy required.
- Then the consultant passes varying pulses of light beams through the top skin layers which are absorbed by the color pigment of the tattoo itself
- Just after a treatment ice is applied to the area to soothe the skin
- Also an antibiotic ointment or cream along with a bandage it put to protect the treated area.
What are the side effects of laser tattoo removal?
This treatment is much safer than other processes for removing a tattoo like dermabrasion, excision, and salabrasion, as the laser selectively works on the color of a tattoo.
The side effects of such a process are very few:
- The tattoo may not be completely removed, in some cases some colors still may remain after multiple sittings. Black and blue are most effectively removed via laser.
- There is a small chance of a permanent scar in the area
- The area of the tattoo is at a risk of an infection
- Cosmetic tattoos i.e. eyeliners, eyebrow lines, lip liner may even get darker after a laser tattoo removal treatment, but they do fade with the progressive sessions.
- There is a chance of hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation, where the skin of the area may be lighter or darker than the surroundings.
